| Title: | Adam Hare - Best New Talent |
| Entrant Company: | String and Tins United Kingdom |
| Notes: | 1 - The Great Frog - Born Great The viewer is brought right into the cinematic world, the sound design amplifies the set design. Adam recorded bespoke ringtones using an analog synthesizer, so that the phones ringing behind the wall were all in time and key with the music. Computer sounds are hyperreal and clunky, the clothes moves are all kung-fu sounds and the metal jewellery sound has layers of chainmail to make this piece sound larger than life. 2 - PETA - Kill the Tradition not a Turkey Sound design is used to highlight the shift in the two conflicting story points, with the first half parodying of the festive season. Light and playful sound effects intend to make you laugh, selling that Christmas “magic”. In complete contrast, the second half sees massive turkey mincers and an automated poultry killing machine grind, zap and chug away while Tessa is a passenger travelling towards her self-aware demise. Both worlds are exaggerated sonically, from bespoke recordings of metal rattles and bangs to worldise the capturer’s van to the thumping snap of the turkey’s death; it's in these key moments of detail that convey the message, kill the tradition, not a turkey. 3 - Audemars Piguet - Nomad The computer screens show CAD (digital) components, which ordinarily would use synthetic sounds. However, Adam wanted this film to feel rooted in organic forms and opted to manipulate percussion instruments to make them “feel” like cogs, then use electronic layers as sweeteners to add some sparkle on top in harmony with the music. When the machines spin up, the sound is musical and characterful rather than realistic. Adam used the sound of a cork bottle pop when the metal piece is lifted at 04:12 which adds a point of punctuation, in contrast to the laser in the following scene which rises and falls in pitch and goes through the reverb of a giant metal spring. 4 - ReRooted - Earth Day Authenticity is at the heart of any nature film. As a naturalist, Adam regularly spends weekends taking nature recordings to incorporate into his work. ReRooted features almost entirely sound from his personal library, all authentically British and accurate to the landscape. Using these soundscapes as a creative tool, the energy in the edit is reflected by sound - with a collage of birds and wind during the montage sequence at 04:22 dropped into almost complete silence, followed by a dawn chorus recording taken by Adam in a British woodland. The sense of calm from this point onward is emphasized by the gentle wind blowing through the reeds, featuring wind Adam recorded during 2026’s Storm Dave, and underpinned by the music which was slowed and pitched down by 5 semitones to create a sense of time slowing down, reflection and being present. 5 - Channel 4 - Masterbrand Idents - Funeral Flowers The above concept is true here as well, authenticity is at the core of this film. Adam travelled to North Norfolk one weekend to create bespoke recordings, capturing the sound of British coastal wetlands. Adam then built a foley prop to recreate the flutter of the windmill. By sticking different types of tape to a windmill he was able to heighten the texture and flappiness of the paper sound, and by winding ribbon around the axel he created a pulley system that allowed me to “play” it without having any wind or hand noise in the recording. |
