Notes: 'Never Stop Playing' is a two minute film directed by Los Perez to champion LEGO's 'Rebuild the World' global campaign. Time Based Arts had the amazing opportunity to work across the duration of the project from initial concepts, shot previsualisation, eventually leading to post production and grade. Tom Holland portrays a range of characters in a diverse universe, ranging from a space army commander to an uptight CEO.

On set our VFX Supervisors make sure they capture every last bit of technical information on location to allow the CG teams to do their work to the highest standard. The biggest part of this is the lighting information, which ensures that our CG renders can be perfectly incorporated by the compositing team into the live action plates once the VFX work is done.

One area of look dev that was particularly important was the CG lego. We had to ensure that it was indistinguishable from the real thing, so we spent a lot of time adjusting the texture and shaders on the bricks to make sure it had the right balance of vibrant colour and reflectivity against the tiny imperfections which make it feel like Lego. It’s hard to spot but our bricks have tiny scratches, thumb prints and flecks of dust as if real hands have created the Lego structures. We feel that the cumulative effect of lots of these almost subconscious details is that the final film is elevated in quality, and the audience can feel the craft that has been pored over by the CG team.

The objective of the film was to use Tom’s character of Playmaker to guide us on a journey through a number of different scenarios. One key CG challenge was to create transitional moments where the playmaker triggers a Lego transformation from one environment to the next. Part of the ‘click’ effect is a pulse of energy that transforms objects into Lego, so we had to create a dynamic simulation that converted our real world environment into the Lego equivalent. These lego environments are then sucked into a vortex of bricks (along with the camera) which creates the final transition.
