| Notes: | ‘The Gastronaut’ launches Waitrose’s new brand platform: The home of food lovers. Instead of following category tropes and focussing on price messaging, we focused on entertaining and resonating emotionally with our audience. Inspired by the sci-fi genre, the film tells the story of an astronaut living in an environment where food is reduced to fuel. As the monotony becomes unbearable, memories of meaningful meals pull him back to Earth and to Waitrose. The challenge was to shift public perception of Waitrose: for it to be seen as the place for people who have a shared passion for good food. Despite being set against the epic backdrop of space, at its heart is a universal truth for food lovers: food is never just fuel. The film is a metaphor for missing food you love; like eating a desk sandwich while craving a proper dinner. And people went looking for it. Search interest for ‘Waitrose ad’ increased 1,800% in the first 72 hours after launch, while mentions of ‘Waitrose advert’ rose 567% in the first week. The film has been described by the Metro as a ‘masterpiece’. |
